It’s been a long time since I made banana bread at home and at the same time I really wanted it. So when the fruit seller at the market offered me some very ripe bananas, I said to myself that this was the opportunity to take advantage of them and the result is this delicious moist chocolate chip Banana Bread recipe!
I based it on my previous recipe by modifying a few little things, as always… 😉 In particular, I added chocolate and used walnuts instead of the pecans more traditionally used in banana bread.
This recipe is ideal for using up bananas that have been left at home a little too long or simply if you want to treat yourself. But I warn you… once you get your head in, you can’t stop… 😉
Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe
What ingredients are used in this recipe?
- flour, I use T65 in this banana bread
- a little baking powder
- a pinch of salt
- soft butter, if you ever forget to take it out of the refrigerator, place the amount you need on a small plate. Heat the water which you will place in a bowl, when it is hot, empty it, dry it and place it upside down on the butter, like a bell. Leave at least a minute and that’s it.
- powdered sugar, I usually like to use whole grain sugar and it works great in this recipe
- fresh eggs
- ripe bananas
- buttermilk, for this you will need to mix the milk with the lemon juice and let it sit
- coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans
- dark chocolate chips or dark baking chocolate cut into pieces
Ingredients details and instructions are available further down the page, in the recipe card.
How to make buttermilk?
To make homemade buttermilk, you only need 2 ingredients
>> milk + lemon juice (or failing that white vinegar/cider vinegar). Pour a tablespoon of lemon juice and add 9 cl of milk. Stir, then leave for 5 to 10 minutes until the milk curdles and the texture thickens. All you have to do is use!

For those with a sweet tooth, you can accompany this Banana Bread with melted chocolate or homemade salted butter caramel, but it will also be delicious as is with a hot drink… 😉

Made this last night, it’s so good! I even had the 4th banana to bake on top so it looks just as good as it tastes. I didn’t have chocolate chips, so subbed with 80g of chopped bar chocolate. I also added a couple little grates of nutmeg and a dash of vanilla, just because. =) It’s not to banana-y or too chocolate-y, it’s just right!
[Instruction #3 has yeast and cinnamon listed as ingredients to combine with the flour, but neither yeast nor cinnamon are in the ingredients list. Baking powder is in the ingredients list, but not in the list of dry items to combine with the flour. “In a salad bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.”]
Thanks for sharing the great recipe!

Many thanks for your message! That’s very kind!
Cinnamon is optional but the nutmeg should be delicious too.
