I wanted to try a homemade Ginger Beer recipe for a long time. In fact, I discovered this drink during my studies internship in Africa.
Henriette, the person I lived with made it regularly, but I must admit that the ginger was stronger and more fragrant than that found in France and she used a lot of it which made it so powerful that I didn’t like it. not. I couldn’t drink it.
As a result, my version is softer and really delicious. For a first, my Ginger Beer is awesome and I’m quite proud of it! 😉
But you may be wondering: what is Ginger Beer?
In fact, it is a ginger beer, based on the fermentation of ginger. It’s a carbonated drink (but not as sparkling as a soda anyway…) but non-alcoholic, very pleasant and refreshing to drink as is.
But which can also be used in cocktails like the famous Moscow Mule with vodka, but you can also enjoy it with rum in a mojito by putting sparkling water instead, or mixing it with it.
I made a simple and rather quick version using baker’s yeast (not baking powder) but you can also make a ginger bug, a bit like sourdough for bread.
Homemade Ginger Beer Recipe
Ginger Beer is really easy to make and really delicious! You don’t need a lot of ingredients (ginger, lemon, lime, sugar, baker’s yeast and water!).
I’m not an expert on fermentation, but it’s magical and everything happens by itself.
If you love ginger and are intrigued, don’t hesitate to try it! You will give me news and you will no longer be able to do without it.
To make your recipe, use plastic bottles because with fermentation and the gases generated, the volume inside the bottles will increase. You will see that I put it in a glass jar for the photo only…
As I have already had quite a few requests for my little copper glasses, I am writing it here. 😉 You can find some on Amazon, they will be great in your home or to give as a gift.

Homemade Ginger Beer Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 liter water
- 110 g fresh and peeled ginger (some people don't peel it)
- 1/2 lemon juice
- 1/2 lime juice
- 100 g brown sugar
- 1/4 tablespoon dehydrated baker's yeast (2 g or 5 g fresh baker's yeast)
TO SERVE
- Lemon or lime slices
- Mint leaves
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Peel the ginger then finely grate it with a grater. Place it in a large bowl, add the lime juice as well as the lemon juice, brown sugar, baker's yeast and 1 liter of water.Mix well and divide into 2 bottles then close. Shake the bottles to mix the water and ingredients well.
- Leave to ferment closed and at room temperature for 24 hours, bubbles will gradually form.Carefully open the bottles and strain your ginger beer. You can then transfer to glass bottles and store in the refrigerator.
Notes
Be careful to use plastic bottles and do not fill them completely as gas will form and the bottles may explode. Also be careful when opening the bottle after fermentation so as not to splash yourself.
You can keep your Ginger Beer for two to three days in a cool place in a tightly closed bottle, but once opened, it is better to drink it more quickly because it tends to lose its gas.
